Q: Will I be given a full price at my implant consultation?

Yes. You'll go home with a written plan that sets out the complete fee for your treatment. Everything your case requires is itemised, whether that's an extraction, a temporary tooth or a bone graft, so there's nothing to be added on afterwards. From the moment you decide to proceed, the fee is locked in. If you're weighing up quotes from elsewhere, make sure the other figure covers the abutment and crown as well as the implant itself, because ours does.

Q: Can I ask my old dentist for my X-rays?

Yes. Under data protection law you're entitled to copies of your own records, and that includes X-rays and scans. Ask the practice to email them either to you or directly to us. Recent X-rays may spare you having more taken, although we might still need fresh ones if they're out of date or don't cover the relevant area. And if you can't obtain them, we'll just take whatever is needed.

Q: How long should a dental implant last?

Looked after properly, an implant can serve you for decades, and plenty of people keep theirs for the rest of their life. The crown sitting on it is another story: chewing wears it day after day, so it may need replacing at some stage. The things that cut an implant's life short are largely in your hands, above all smoking, infection in the gum surrounding it, and missing the hygiene appointments where small problems get spotted. If you grind your teeth, the crown may chip or loosen over time, which is why we often suggest a night guard.

We'll ask what troubles you about the gap, or the teeth you've lost, and run through your medical history and medication. Our implant dentist then examines the space, the gum and the way your teeth bite together, and where a CT scan is required arranges one (£160), so you can see your own bone on the screen. By the time you go home you'll have a written plan, the options open to you and a fixed fee.
