General Dentist, Broughty Ferry
Everyday Dental Care for the Ferry, Dundee and Angus
Check-ups (we call them dental examinations), hygiene visits, fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, dentures and a same-day appointment when a tooth breaks, all under one roof at 196 Brook Street, a short walk from Broughty Ferry station. A private dental examination costs £70. 1 Children are registered and treated on the NHS straight away.
Opening times: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm. Closed at weekends.
Dental Examinations
We check each tooth, the gums, the way your teeth meet and the soft tissues of the mouth. X-rays come into it only when they would show something the eye can't.
Emergencies, Seen Today
A throbbing tooth, a face that has swollen up, a tooth that has broken in half. We hold appointments back each weekday for people in pain, whether or not they're registered with us.
Hygiene with Pretty
Pretty Wilson, our hygienist, removes tartar, uses Airflow to lift stain when you want it, and sorts out bleeding gums early, before they become a bigger problem.
White Fillings
We remove the decay and rebuild the tooth with composite matched to its colour, so the repair disappears. One visit is usually all it takes.
Root Canal Treatment
If the nerve of a tooth has become infected or is dying, we can clean and seal the root canals and keep the tooth, rather than take it out.
Crowns and Onlays
A full or partial ceramic cover for a tooth that has cracked, been root treated or is mostly filling. We scan the tooth digitally, so there's no putty impression.
Bridges
A replacement tooth supported by the teeth either side of the space. In many cases those teeth need very little preparation, or none at all.
Dentures
Acrylic or chrome, replacing a few teeth or a whole arch. A denture that moves about can be held firm on implants.
Extractions
If a tooth is beyond saving, we remove it as gently as possible, wisdom teeth included, and agree what will replace it before it comes out. IV sedation can be arranged.
Guards and Splints
Custom night guards to protect against grinding and clenching, mouthguards for rugby, hockey and other contact sports, and appliances that help with snoring.
What an Examination Covers
How Often Should You Visit?
Six months is a habit, not a rule. If your gums are healthy and you haven't had decay for a while, a yearly examination may be enough, sometimes one every two years. If gum disease is active or you have a mouthful of fillings, three-monthly visits may be wiser.
We agree the interval together and tell you the reasoning behind it. For most adults, two to four hygiene visits a year works well, and a dental plan bundles examinations and hygiene into one monthly payment from £24.10.
If it has been years since you last sat in a dental chair, you're in good company. That first appointment is simply about taking stock, and nobody here will lecture you.
Replacing a Lost Tooth
We always try to save a tooth first. When that isn't possible, there are four ways to close the gap.
Bridges
Anchored to the teeth beside the gap, with no surgery involved. From £675 per unit. More about bridges
Partial Dentures
Removable, and usually the least expensive option when several teeth have gone. From £565. More about dentures
Dental Implants
A titanium post in the jawbone carrying a crown, independent of the other teeth. From £2,605 including the crown. Every implant is planned by Dr Sharma from a CT scan.
Implant-Retained Dentures
A complete denture clipped onto implants, so it doesn't shift when you eat. From £8,500 for each jaw.
The Team You'll See
NHS or Private?
Children and adults are registered and treated on the NHS, with every dentist at the practice, and private care is there if you'd rather. NHS Tayside oversees the NHS side of our work. On the private side, every fee is fixed and listed on our fees page, so there are no surprises once you've agreed a plan.
