Sedation Dentistry, Broughty Ferry
Calm, Comfortable Treatment with IV Sedation
A session of IV sedation at Ferry Smile Studios is £500. The sedative goes in through a vein and leaves you conscious but profoundly relaxed, able to respond to us, and most people remember little or nothing afterwards. It's available for implant surgery, lengthy appointments, and anyone whose fear of the dentist has kept them away for years.
The first session is £500, with every additional 30 minutes at £250. The sedation fee appears in your written plan before you commit to anything.
Where Sedation Makes a Difference
Sedation always goes hand in hand with local anaesthetic. One keeps you relaxed; the other keeps you free of pain.
When We'd Advise Against It
All of this is discussed with you long before a date goes in the diary.
What Happens on the Day
This is conscious sedation rather than a general anaesthetic. A sedation-trained clinician administers it through a slim cannula in the back of the hand or the arm, and a trained team monitors you from beginning to end while the dentist carries out the treatment.
Assessment
We go through your medical history, check your blood pressure and talk about what worries you most. This normally takes place at your consultation.
Preparing
Eat a light meal before you set off. Arrange for an adult to bring you, wait while you're treated, and take you home afterwards.
During Treatment
Your pulse, breathing and oxygen levels are monitored throughout. You'll still be able to hear the dentist and respond to what's asked.
Afterwards
Head home and rest. No driving, alcohol, machinery or important paperwork for the next 24 hours.
What It Feels Like
Most people describe a warm, heavy, pleasantly sleepy feeling. An hour in the chair can feel like ten minutes, and memories of the appointment are often hazy or absent altogether.
You remain able to hear what's being said and to manage simple requests, such as turning your head or opening a little wider. The area being worked on is numbed with local anaesthetic as it normally would be, so there's no pain.
Is it safe? Conscious sedation is an everyday part of dentistry in the UK. Your vital signs are tracked the whole time, and the practice holds emergency drugs and equipment, as all dental practices must.
People come to us from Dundee, Angus and across the Tay for implant treatment, and sedation can be included for the surgical appointments.

Treatments We Often Sedate For
Where nerves are the obstacle, almost any treatment can be done under sedation. These are the usual ones.
Full Arch and All-on-4
The implant surgery for a whole arch is one long appointment, and under sedation it seems to fly by.
Individual Implants
Implant surgery and bone grafting, for anyone who would rather not be wide awake for it.
Implant-Retained Dentures
Fitting the two to four implants a denture will clip onto.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Surgical extraction, which for many people is the procedure they dread most.
Catching Up in One Go
A backlog of fillings or crowns, dealt with in one or two extended sessions.
A Long Absence From the Dentist
The root canals, fillings and crowns that fear has made you postpone.
