The standard appointment lasts half an hour. When there's heavy build-up, or it has been years since your last clean, we book an hour-long deep clean instead.
Gum Check
Pretty measures the gum round each tooth and records any bleeding or pockets, so that any change is caught early.
Scaling
Hardened tartar is lifted from above and just below the gum line using fine hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler.
Airflow Polishing
A jet of warm water, air and fine powder strips away plaque and the stains left by coffee, tea, red wine and cigarettes.
Home Care
Interdental brushes sized to your gaps, and a look in your own mouth at the two or three spots you keep missing.
The Case for Airflow
Airflow replaces the gritty polishing paste of old. Staining lifts in minutes, it gets into the tricky places around implants, bridges, braces and crowded teeth, and it's kinder to gums that are already tender.
It's included in every hygiene visit on our dental plans. Paying per visit, it's £100 for a 30-minute appointment, or £30 as an add-on.
When Gum Disease Has Set In
Once the disease has reached the bone, an ordinary clean won't do. Pretty treats it beneath the gum in a planned series of stages.
Time for a Visit?
Gum disease in its early stages is painless, so don't wait for it to hurt. If any of these ring a bell, book in.
Blood in the Basin
Bleeding when you brush or floss is the first and most common sign that gums are inflamed.
Breath That Won't Stay Fresh
When it creeps back soon after brushing, plaque under the gum is the likely culprit.
A Rough Edge Along the Gum
Tartar your tongue can detect, often behind the lower front teeth. No toothbrush will remove it.
Teeth That Look Longer
Receding gums, sometimes with a sharp twinge from cold drinks at the neck of the tooth.
Implants, Bridges or Braces
All of them trap plaque where it's awkward to clean, so the gum around them needs extra attention.
Pregnancy
Hormonal changes make gums puffier and quicker to bleed, so an additional visit can be worthwhile.
In Between Appointments
Your Gums and Your General Health
Diabetes and gum disease make each other worse: inflamed gums drive blood sugar up, and poorly controlled blood sugar damages the gums. Managing either one helps the other.
Tell us if you're expecting, have diabetes or take medication that dries the mouth or swells the gums. We'll recommend an interval that suits you rather than defaulting to six months for everyone.
