Treating Gum Disease in Broughty Ferry
Gum Disease, Stopped in Its Tracks
Pretty Wilson, our dental hygienist, looks after gum disease here on Brook Street. She records the depth of every pocket, cleans beneath the gum line in planned stages at £100 per stage, and then keeps things stable with you. When it's caught early, a single deep clean (£130) is often all that's needed.Pretty Wilson, our hygienist, charts your gums and treats gum disease stage by stage, £100 per stage.
Four stages is typical. Both dental plans include hygiene visits, and members get 10% off the deep clean and every gum treatment stage. 1
Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Because gum disease rarely causes pain until it's advanced, most people don't notice it creeping up.
Pink in the Sink
Gums in good health don't bleed during brushing. Blood means inflammation, and easing off with the brush will not cure it.
Bad Breath That Keeps Coming Back
It comes from bacteria beneath the gum line. A mouthwash masks it briefly and then it returns.
Receding Gums
Your teeth seem longer than before, and the root surface now on show near the gum can be sensitive to cold.
Swollen, Red Gum Margins
The edge of the gum looks puffy, shiny or dark red, and often feels sore when you use floss.
Drifting or Loose Teeth
Front teeth splaying outwards, a gap that wasn't there before, or a tooth with a little give when you chew.
Wider Health Effects
Studies link gum disease with diabetes and heart disease. Inflamed gums make blood sugar harder to control, and they put dental implants at risk too.
One Cause, Two Stages
Both begin with plaque left sitting at the gum line. The difference is how far down it has travelled.
How Treatment Runs
Chart and Photograph
Pretty measures the gum around each tooth, and X-rays reveal how much bone is left. You leave knowing exactly where you stand, with the fee in writing.
Clean, Then Teach
Airflow lifts away stain and soft plaque, and scaling removes the hardened tartar. Then she demonstrates, using your own teeth, the interdental brush sizes that fit you and the areas you tend to miss.
Deep Cleaning, a Quarter at a Time
With periodontitis, each root is cleaned right down inside its pocket under local anaesthetic. We work on one quarter of the mouth at each visit, so four visits in most cases.
Measure Again, Then Keep It Stable
Around three months on, the pockets are re-measured. After that, a hygiene visit every three months keeps the disease from returning.
Why Bother Treating It
Gum disease, not decay, is the main reason adults lose teeth, and almost all of it is preventable. Treat gingivitis today and it goes. Treat periodontitis today and, although the lost bone stays lost, the disease stops and the teeth can usually last a lifetime.
Healthy gums also set the limits on everything else. Implants placed into inflamed tissue fail far more often, a bridge depends entirely on the teeth that carry it, and moving teeth with aligners through active gum disease is unwise. That's why, here in Broughty Ferry, we settle the gums before any implant or cosmetic treatment starts.
Both of our dental plans include hygiene appointments (Plan A is £24.10 a month, Plan B £40.16). With four visits a year, Plan B is the natural fit for three-monthly maintenance.
