Extractions in Broughty Ferry
Removing a Tooth Gently, with What Comes Next Already Planned
On Brook Street a straightforward extraction is £125, while a wisdom tooth or surgical removal is £450. Nearly all are carried out under local anaesthetic in comfortably less than an hour, and IV sedation is available when anxiety would otherwise stop you coming. We'll also be honest beforehand about whether the tooth might be saved instead.
A session of IV sedation is £500. An extraction with collagen dressing and stitches is £220. If you're in pain, we try to fit you in the same day. 1
When Removal Is the Right Call
Our first instinct is almost always to save the tooth. In these situations, though, taking it out is usually the kinder option.
Cracked or Broken Down to Gum Level
When a fracture runs into the root, or there's too little tooth above the gum for a crown to grip, nothing we build will hold.
Repeated Infection
An abscess returning even after root treatment, or a previously root-filled tooth failing for a second time.
Loose From Gum Disease
When the bone around a root has largely gone, the tooth wobbles and can't be made firm again.
Wisdom Teeth Causing Trouble
Lower wisdom teeth wedged against the molar ahead of them, partly erupted with the gum repeatedly inflamed, or decayed because no toothbrush can reach.
Space for Straightening
Occasionally an aligner or brace plan needs room that only an extraction can create.
A Baby Tooth That Won't Budge
A milk tooth still firmly in place while the adult tooth beneath is ready to erupt.
Simple or Surgical?
We go over the X-ray with you in advance, so you'll know which kind yours is before you arrive.
What Happens on the Day
X-Ray, with a Scan Where Needed
A small X-ray reveals the root shape. Where a lower wisdom tooth lies close to the nerve supplying your lip, a CT scan on the scanner here on Brook Street shows the gap between them in three dimensions.
Numbing Up
Nothing starts until the area is completely numb. Expect pressure and pushing rather than pain. If you're having sedation, the drug is given first via a small cannula in your hand or arm, and most people remember very little of the appointment.
Taking the Tooth Out
A simple extraction is over quickly. Surgical ones take a little longer, and we explain what you'll notice before each stage.
Heading Home
You'll bite on gauze until the bleeding has settled, then go home with written instructions and a number to message if anything concerns you.
Wisdom Teeth: Keep Them or Not?
Many wisdom teeth never cause a problem. If yours have come fully through, can be cleaned and aren't bothering you, we leave them alone and monitor them at your examinations. UK guidance doesn't support removing healthy wisdom teeth as a precaution.
Removal becomes sensible when a wisdom tooth repeatedly sets off gum infections (pericoronitis), has decay that can't realistically be filled, or is harming the molar beside it. Uppers tend to be simpler than lowers.
For lower wisdom teeth the main risks are dry socket and, more rarely, a numb lip or tongue from bruising to a nearby nerve, which in most cases recovers. We go through your personal risk on the scan before you decide anything. If you're coming over from Carnoustie or Forfar for a sedation appointment, someone will need to drive you back.
Recovering at Home
Deciding What Replaces It
A space right at the back doesn't always need to be filled. Given time, though, the neighbouring teeth can lean into it, the tooth above or below can over-erupt, and the jawbone shrinks, much of it within a few months. Where the tooth is to be replaced, the decision is best made before it's removed.
With a front tooth, an immediate denture (£495) or a resin-retained bridge (each unit £675) ensures you're never left showing a gap. For something permanent, a dental implant can be placed in the healed socket after a few months, or occasionally on the day of the extraction itself.
Considering an Implant?
Every implant Dr Nikhil Sharma places is planned on a CT scan taken on Brook Street, which lets him judge whether the bone can take an implant immediately or should heal first. There's no charge for the consultation beyond a £40 deposit, returned within 7 days of attending.

In Pain, or Been Told a Tooth Must Go?
Where there's pain, we'll do our best to see you today. We're also glad to offer a second opinion on whether the tooth can be kept, and to arrange sedation if that's what makes the visit possible.
