Where to Turn, and When
Dental problems never seem to wait for a good moment. The right call depends on the hour and on how urgent it is.
| Weekdays, during opening hours | Call 01382 477350 or book a same-day appointment online. The earlier you ring, the wider the choice of times. |
| Evenings, weekends and holidays | Phone NHS 24 on 111. They'll assess you over the phone, offer advice and arrange urgent NHS dental treatment where it can't wait. |
| Trouble breathing or swallowing, serious bleeding or an injury to the face | 999 or A&E, whatever the time. This is beyond what a dental appointment can deal with. |
| Painful, but manageable overnight | Take painkillers, follow the first aid below, and call us as soon as we open. |
What to Do Before You Reach Us
A few simple steps that ease the wait and can sometimes save a tooth.
A Knocked-Out Adult Tooth
Hold it by the crown, the white part, and never by the root. Rinse it briefly in milk if it's dirty, push it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If it won't go in, keep it in milk and see a dentist within the hour. Never replant a baby tooth.
Relentless Toothache
Ibuprofen or paracetamol at the dose on the packet, provided they're safe for you, taken regularly instead of waiting for the pain to build. Sleep with your head raised. Don't place aspirin on the gum; it burns the tissue.
Swelling in the Gum or Cheek
Call us the moment we open. A cold pack in a tea towel helps, heat makes it worse. Swelling spreading towards the eye or down the neck, or difficulty swallowing, means A&E.
A Chipped Tooth or Lost Filling
Keep any broken piece in milk. Rinse with warm water and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax. Eat on the opposite side. More about broken teeth
A Crown That Has Fallen Off
Wrap it in a clean tissue or bag and bring it with you, since it can often be refitted. Avoid household glue. Temporary cement from a pharmacy will hold it in place for a day or two.
Bleeding From a Socket
Fold a piece of gauze or a clean handkerchief, put it over the socket and bite down firmly for 20 minutes without peeking. Stay sitting up. If it's still bleeding after a second attempt, call us, or 111 when we're shut.
What to Expect at the Appointment
Our priority is making you comfortable. The permanent repair follows later, after you've had a chance to consider the options.

Diagnosis
Your dentist listens to what's been happening, looks at the area and, where necessary, takes an X-ray. Everything is explained in plain English before anything is done.
Relieving the Pain
Almost everyone goes home more comfortable: a dressing, a temporary filling, draining an abscess, removing an inflamed nerve or, when a tooth can't be saved, extracting it.
Options for the Long-Term Repair
We explain each option and its cost. Nothing further happens until you've agreed, and there's no need to decide there and then.
What We See Week in, Week Out
Unsure whether yours is an emergency? Give us a call and ask. We'd much rather you did.
Toothache and Abscesses
Deep throbbing pain, a swollen gum or a nasty taste, typically from decay reaching the nerve or a cracked tooth. Abscess advice
Chipped, Cracked and Broken Teeth
From a rough edge to a molar split down the middle. Bring the fragment if you have it. Broken tooth advice
Lost Crowns and Fillings
A crown that's still intact can usually be re-cemented (£70). If not, we seal the tooth to protect it while a replacement is made.
Teeth Knocked Out or Loosened
The sooner a tooth is back in its socket, the better the outlook. Use the first aid steps above and head straight to us.
Wisdom Tooth Flare-Ups
A swollen gum at the very back, a one-sided sore throat and a jaw that won't open properly. Wisdom teeth
Dentures, Bridges and Implants
A cracked denture, a bridge that has come loose or a wobbly implant crown. Jaw locking or aching? Jaw pain
Outside Our Opening Hours
We're open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm. Closed at weekends. At any other time, call NHS 24 on 111. They'll ask about your symptoms, give advice and, where you need urgent care, direct you to the out-of-hours NHS dental service.
If it's bearable, painkillers plus the first aid steps above usually tide people over until the next weekday, when you can call us the moment we open. Members of our dental plans can also use the out-of-hours cover that comes with their plan.
Won't Antibiotics Fix It?
Generally not, which catches many people out. The usual cause of toothache is a nerve inside the tooth that's inflamed or has died, or a crack, and no tablet can reach either of those.
We do prescribe them when infection is spreading or making you unwell, but always together with treatment. The real fix is a filling, root canal treatment or taking the tooth out.

You Don't Have to Be Local
Anyone in pain can use our same-day appointments, not just those living in the Ferry, Barnhill or along Brook Street. We regularly see patients from Dundee, Monifieth, Arbroath, from Forfar, Tayport, Carnoustie and, over the bridge, Newport-on-Tay.
There's no need for a referral from your usual dentist, and being on another practice's books doesn't prevent you booking here.
