Making Whitening Last
Why the colour creeps back, topping up with trays you already own, the foods, drinks and habits that make the difference, and where hygiene visits fit in.
What Keeps Teeth White Once They Have Been Whitened?
Keep your custom trays safe and, whenever the colour begins to drift, wear them for a few nights with top-up gel. Between times, chase tea, coffee and red wine with water, take cold dark drinks through a straw, avoid cigarettes and vapes, and keep up your hygiene appointments so stain gets polished away. Managed like that, a result will generally hold for well over a year. At our Broughty Ferry practice, home whitening is £350, or £315 if you are on a plan.
Why the Colour Creeps Back
Whitening gel breaks apart the pigment molecules held within enamel and dentine, and that effect is not something that simply wears away. What actually happens is that fresh stain slowly accumulates from the same culprits that discoloured the teeth in the first place: coffee, tea, wine, tobacco and the rest. The whiteness does not fade so much as get covered over again.
For most patients this takes a year at least, and often several. A heavy tea drinker who smokes will notice it long before a non-smoker who sticks mainly to water. We note the shade you achieved at your review, which gives you a benchmark for later.
Top-Ups with the Trays You Already Own
The trays are what matter in the kit, because they fit nobody's teeth but yours. Keep them in their case, rinse under cool water after each wear (hot water will warp them) and brush them lightly. Top-up gel can be bought from us here at the practice.
Topping up normally means a few nights in the trays rather than a full repeat course. Many patients do one ahead of a wedding, a landmark birthday or a trip away. Keep to the wear time we recommended, since wearing trays longer than advised tends to give you sensitivity instead of a brighter shade. If a crown, bonding or filling since then has stopped the trays seating properly, we can scan you for a replacement pair.

What Causes Stain
| Source | The reason it stains | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee, tea, red wine | Full of tannins and pigment | Water once you have finished |
| Cola and similar dark fizzy drinks | Acidic as well as coloured, so the enamel surface roughens | Drink through a straw and pair them with food |
| Curries, turmeric, tomato and soy sauces | Heavily pigmented | Rinse, or finish the meal with something crunchy, salad for instance |
| Berries, beetroot and dark juices | Strong natural colour | Water once you have finished |
| Cigarettes and vapes | Tar, nicotine and certain flavourings | Quitting, or cutting down hard |
Stain comes in two forms. Surface stain sits on the outside of the tooth and in plaque, and thorough brushing together with hygiene visits clears it. Deeper discolouration seeps into the tooth over many years, and whitening is what reverses it. Acid aggravates both by roughening the surface so that pigment has something to grip.
Daily Habits That Pay Off
- Drink water with your coffee or wine, or immediately after it
- Sip dark cold drinks and juices through a straw
- Hold off brushing for an hour after juice, cola or wine, because acid leaves enamel softened for a short while
- Brush morning and night with fluoride toothpaste, and floss or use interdental brushes daily, because stain settles in plaque
- Stop smoking or vaping if you possibly can; nothing undoes a result quicker
- Clean your trays, retainers and night guards, as they collect stain as well
Whitening toothpaste has a modest role. It can lift a little surface stain between hygiene visits, but the colour inside the tooth is unchanged, and the more abrasive ones will wear enamel or dull bonding with daily use. A couple of times a week will do.
How Hygiene Visits Help the Shade
A professional clean gets to stain your toothbrush cannot, especially between the teeth and along the gum margin. Airflow lifts stain and plaque with a fine jet of warm water, air and powder rather than scraping, and most patients find it easy to tolerate. Our hygienist can also show you where stain is gathering and explain why.
A 30-minute appointment is £70, or £100 when Airflow is included. Both are built into our dental plans (Plan A at £24.10 a month, Plan B at £40.16). Booking a hygiene visit shortly before a top-up is a good idea too, because the gel then acts on clean enamel.
Fillings, Bonding and Crowns
Since whitening gel cannot lighten any of these, the goal is to keep them matching the natural teeth beside them. Ceramic and porcelain resist stain well; composite is slightly more porous and benefits from the habits described above plus a regular polish. Should a top-up leave an older filling or some bonding looking a shade darker than its neighbours, polishing or refreshing it usually sorts the problem.
If bonding or veneers are on the cards, whiten first, allow roughly two weeks for the shade to settle, and then have the new work colour-matched. Our whitening before bonding guide explains why the order matters.
When to Think About a New Course
Whitening again under a dentist's care is safe, although most people never need more than the odd top-up. If several years have passed, your trays have gone missing, or they no longer fit because of other dental work, book in for a consultation. We will examine your teeth and gums, treat any decay or gum trouble first, and agree a shade that is achievable for you.
Boutique home whitening costs £350, or £315 for members of our plan, and it is included in every Invisalign and bonding package. 1 In the UK, whitening has to be prescribed by a dentist, and anyone offering it outside a dental practice is doing so unlawfully.
Questions
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
