Braces or Invisalign?
Two routes to straighter teeth, compared frankly: what each is like to live with, the jobs each does better, and how to settle on the right one for you.
As an Adult, Should I Go for Fixed Braces or Invisalign?
For the problems adults usually bring us (crowded or spaced teeth, a twisted tooth or a mild bite issue) Invisalign delivers results on a par with fixed braces, and because it comes out it is a great deal easier to live with. Fixed braces remain the better choice for major bite problems rooted in the jaws, and for anyone who will not manage 20 to 22 hours of aligner wear a day. Here in Broughty Ferry, Dr Nikhil Sharma offers a free consultation with an iTero scan to tell you which suits your teeth, and if braces are the better option we will refer you to an orthodontist.
One Mechanism, Two Delivery Methods
Underneath, every way of straightening teeth relies on the same process. Gentle, continuous pressure on a tooth causes the bone on one side to give way while fresh bone builds on the other, and the tooth creeps along by tiny fractions of a millimetre. The difference lies in how that pressure is applied.
Fixed braces use a small bracket on every tooth, with a wire running through all of them. That wire is tightened or replaced at each visit, and the teeth follow it. Since they cannot be removed, they work twenty-four hours a day without any input from you.
Invisalign works through a run of clear plastic trays, every one a fraction different from its predecessor, changed every week or two. Tooth-coloured attachments, small bumps bonded to certain teeth, give the plastic a purchase point. The entire sequence is mapped digitally from an iTero scan, which means you can see the intended end result before you start.
Day-to-Day, Side by Side
| Feature | Invisalign | Fixed braces |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Clear and easily missed | Visible brackets and wire |
| Eating | Trays out, eat what you like | No hard, sticky or chewy foods |
| Brushing and flossing | Unchanged | Slower, needing special brushes |
| Comfort in the mouth | Smooth edges | Brackets may rub lips and cheeks |
| Breakages | Unusual | Loose brackets and poking wires happen |
| What keeps it working | Your wearing it | The appliance itself, round the clock |
| Serious jaw problems | Limited scope | Generally the better choice |
In a typical adult case the finished result is often much the same either way. What usually decides it is how much weight you give to each of those rows.
Unsure Which Path to Take?
A free scan and simulation shows what aligners could achieve for you.
Invisalign's Advantages
- Discretion. Colleagues, clients and wedding photographers seldom notice clear aligners.
- Food. Nothing is off the menu, since the trays come out. You simply brush before putting them back.
- Hygiene. Your usual routine continues unchanged, important for adults who have crowns, fillings or gums needing attention.
- Fewer emergencies. No wires to snap and no brackets to re-bond.
- A preview. You see the planned outcome before you spend anything.
- Relapse cases. Teeth that have moved since teenage braces are frequently a short, inexpensive Express or Lite course.
Where Braces Have the Edge
When the underlying issue lies in the jaw and not the teeth, fixed braces are normally the right place to begin, sometimes alongside jaw surgery. They also handle certain movements more predictably: rotating a badly turned canine, bringing a tooth down into the line of the arch or pressing one up into the bone, and closing the wide gap an extraction leaves behind.
Then there is the human element. Aligners do nothing while they are out. If you already suspect yours would spend most days on the bedside table, the more honest option is braces, since they do not depend on willpower.
We do not fit fixed braces at this practice. If they would give you a better outcome, we will say why and arrange a referral to an orthodontist. Nobody benefits from aligners being started on a case they cannot properly finish.
Comfort and Everyday Life
With aligners, what you mostly notice is a sense of pressure for the first day or two of each new tray. Most people call it tight rather than painful. Speech can be slightly altered for the first few days.
Braces are usually sore during the first few weeks while the inside of the lips toughens, and again after each adjustment. Food lodges in the wires, and carrying interdental brushes becomes second nature. If plaque is allowed to sit around the brackets it can leave chalky patches on the enamel when the brackets eventually come off, so cleaning must be meticulous.
Whatever you decide, keep up your hygiene appointments. Airflow gets gently in around brackets and attachments, in the places a toothbrush struggles to reach.
Timescales and Cost
For cases suited to either, treatment length is roughly the same. Minor corrections take a few months; larger ones usually run from a year to eighteen months. The distinction is that braces carry on working on your lazy days, whereas aligners only stay on schedule if they are worn 20 to 22 hours a day.
Invisalign with us starts at £2,500 for Express and goes up to £5,000 for Comprehensive Plus. Included in the fee are your scans and X-rays, all the aligners, any refinements, a set of Vivera retainers, whitening at home and one hygiene appointment. 1 Which package suits which teeth is explained in the Invisalign cost guide. If you are weighing this against a braces quote, check whether the figure includes retainers, adjustment appointments and repairs.
We have held Invisalign Diamond Apex status every year from 2022 to 2026. That tier is awarded on case numbers (it marks the top 1% of European providers by volume) rather than on any qualification, but it does tell you that aligners are a big part of our work.
Retainers Either Way
Whichever route you take, the teeth will try to drift back afterwards, so retainers are unavoidable: full time at first, then at night for the long haul. After braces it is commonly a removable retainer, a thin wire cemented behind the front teeth, or the two together. After Invisalign with us, Vivera retainers are part of the package. The routine is covered in our retainers guide.
Because retainers are a lifelong commitment, it is worth considering which type would suit you better. A removable retainer is a nightly habit that relies on your memory. A bonded wire asks nothing of your memory, but flossing around it is slower and it can come loose without you noticing.
Reaching a Decision
Begin with what is actually going on in your own mouth. Come for a free consultation at our Broughty Ferry practice, let us examine your teeth and gums and take your iTero Lumina scan, and study the simulation. That shows whether aligners can get you to a good result and gives a fair idea of the package.
Only then think about your habits, and be candid: if you graze all day, travel constantly or know you would mislay the trays, tell us. We would far rather point you to an orthodontist for braces than start you on aligners you will not wear. Patients come to us from Dundee, Monifieth and Carnoustie as well as from the Ferry itself, and with a review only every six to eight weeks the appointments are brief.
Questions
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
